Live Healthy Mission

Who are we? We are Forest Parkers striving to teach and motivate our family, friends, and neighbors to become active, eat better, and live longer.

Our goal is to feed the children healthier foods at school, teach neighborhoods how to grow fruits and vegetables, walk and bike to local shops and grocery stores, donate fresh homegrown garden produce to the food pantry, introduce friends and family to the Prairie Path, play at the parks, and more.

We’d like our town to feel good, look great, and be smart, healthy and strong. How do we get there? One step at a time, quite literally!

2011 is our kickoff year and we’re planning a weekly Farmers’ Market, expansion of the Community Garden, “walkable” School bus, bike races, wellness classes, delicious healthy meal planning tips, competitions, collaborations with local businesses for discount shopping and dining, and much more!

If you would like to join us, share an idea, or just comment on our mission, please reach out to Denise Murray at

Stay tuned…more to come.

In September 2016, the Cook County Department of Public Health held a conference on the significant role of food in preventing, developing and resolving chronic diseases. There was also information on ways that nutrition can support the health and well-being of communities. They recently made the presentations available online. Some of the information is pretty compelling. If you're interested in the info, please click on the link below.

Bicycling and Walking in Forest Park

Hello Active Transportation Supporters,

Forest Park adopted their Active Transportation Plan on January 9! Because of your contributions, this plan truly reflects a community vision for bicycling and walking in Forest Park.

One of our next steps is to form a Bicycle/Pedestrian advisory group. This is a fun and effective way to move forward on plan recommendations. If you would like to participate, let's meet to get acquainted and discuss activities.

Thursday, March 29 at 7:00p.m.
at the Howard Mohr Community Center,
7640 Jackson Blvd. in Forest Park.

I'm sure that each of you will have ideas to share.
Some of these could include:

• Writing a letter of support for the plan to the Village Council
• Partnering with local organizations on active transportation events
• Using social media to publicize active transportation issues and goals

Please let us know if you plan to attend.
You may contact me by an RSVP to this email,
or Ruth Myers at or 312-427-3325, ext. 242.

And feel free to invite your friends and neighbors.

Hope to see you there!
Make a healthy choice today,
Denise Murray

Park District - Saturday Bike Rides:

To recap our now 3 great Saturday am bike rides. We have had an average of 13-15 riders each week, from 3 years old in a bike buggy, pre-teens, teenagers, which yes do wear helmets, to over the age of 54+. We have new people & return riders each week. The veteran cyclists are great at giving pointers to newer riders, from tips of pedaling with the balls of your feet, to the adjustment of the bike seat to get the most efficient pedal power. We also were grateful to have “Havoline Xpress Lube” repair & Oil change business at 1308 S 1st. Avenue in Maywood available to us on our inaugural ride to help inflate our bike tire pressure.

Please see photos posted here.

These rides are a direct result of The Live Healthy Forest Park Mission, steering team, and collaborative inspiration with committee members, Denise Murray & Melinda Holmes Peterson. Melinda, a local Forest Park business owner and residents is also a certified Spin Cycle instructor, and has donated several spin cycles to The Park District of Forest Park, offering Spin Cycle classes starting on Sept., 12th.

Plans are also in the works for a 5 K in the Village at the end of October.
